The history

As a complementary therapy, Indian head massage is based on the Ayurvedic system of healing. It has been practised in India for thousands of years and is still widely used today. Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient form of healing that came from India.  Ayurvedic medicine is said to be a total medical system that can be used to treat mental, physical and emotional conditions.

Based on the Ayurvedic system, Indian Head Massage treats the mind and the body. The massage focuses on the head, neck and shoulders. The method uses a deep massage technique with a variety of pressures, including circular strokes on the scalp and deep tissue work on the shoulders and neck.

The benefits

India Head Massage focuses on the three ‘chakras’ – the mind, spirit and body. Whilst the massage is a brilliant way to release stress and tension, it goes beyond simple relaxation.

The treatment can result in feelings of detachment and serenity, alertness and clear headedness. It provides an excellent way to clear the mind, and can realign mind, body and spirit.

In addition it can relieve aches, pains and tension. Not just in the head, neck and shoulders, but throughout the body. Indian head massage stimulates blood flow, and can have further benefits: clearing the sinuses, detoxing and aiding sleep quality.

Finally, it can also reduce headaches, anxiety, eye strain and stress. Authentic Ayurvedic treatment may use herbs and fragrant oils to enhance the experience.

What to expect from an Indian Head Massage session

The treatment generally lasts between 15-30 minutes. Your therapist may chat to you before hand. They may ask a few questions about your lifestyle and if you are suffering from anything that they might be able to help with. In addition you may be asked if you take any medication or are undergoing any medical treatment.

Some of the massage can feel quite firm, and may feel unusual to begin with, but once you relax into the treatment you will quickly start to feel the benefits.

Indian Head Massage can provide a great additional benefit in the workplace, to help employees relax and focus, as well as reducing any stress. To find out more about our chair massage at work services click here.
